Dead Darlings Virtual Book Tour: Jen Jensen, Jamis Bachman, Ghost Hunter

What is your book about?

Jamis Bachman never stays in one place for too long. Retired from the reality TV show Ghastly Incidents, she’s now a social media sensation, chasing ghosts, demons, and interdimensional aliens―in an effort to avoid her own.

When a desperate young couple sends Jamis a video of a poltergeist disturbance, she jumps on a plane to Sage Creek, Utah, not knowing her world is about to change forever. Ghost stories she can handle, but a violent poltergeist, a brutal unsolved twenty-five-year-old murder, and meeting the love of her life? She’s in way over her head. Jamis thought she was the one chasing ghosts, but it seems as though something is chasing her…

It’s a story about trauma, healing, and living in the present, in spite of the past.

Can you tell us about your path to publication?

I submitted Jamis to another publisher in early 2018 but the story was rejected. I made a goal to send it to Bold Strokes Book by December 31, 2018 after significant revision. I made the date – by a day! – and heard back with the amazing news in February 2019 that they wanted to publish my book.

Where were you when you heard your book tour and/or launch party was cancelled and what did you do?

I actually made the call myself yesterday after listening to the new CDC and White House guidelines. I really wanted my mom and dad to see me, and my books, in a store, but given the risks, I knew it could wait. I also learned just this week that Clexacon, a conference I was planning on attending to promote my book, was cancelled. All around disappointing, but it’s totally for the greater good.

Are you and your publisher doing anything special/ different instead of a book tour to promote your novel?

Not at this time. We’ll wait and see how the dust settles. Everything feels too uncertain to make any plans right now.

On a lighter note, do you have any quirky writing rituals?

I need a bunch of unstructured time on either side of me to really focus and write. Meaning, I can’t have anyone expect me to go anywhere or do anything. When I have space, I can write up to 4,000 words a day.

What was the hardest cut you had to make from your book, your favorite Dead Darling?

I had to cut my opening sequence. I’ve had this story in my head for years. I always imagined the story began with Jamis getting off the airplane in Salt Lake City and driving to Sage Creek. I had this whole interior monologue where I introduced her to the reader as she moved closer and closer to the town. But in the end, no matter how hard I tried, it never worked. It was slow, people got bored, so finally, I cut it. In final edits, I started the book with Jamis already in Sage Creek, but in my head, the story started the day before, in Salt Lake City. But I still have it and love it.  It’s my favorite Dead Darling.
