YA Wednesday: June YA Reads, Romantic Heroes to Avoid, Binge Reading Sarah Dessen, Problems Only YA Characters Understand

School’s out for summer. Almost. I still remember the delicious feeling of having a couple of months when my time was finally my own. And I would have appreciated it even more if I’d known that a soul crushing 9-5 job that didn’t give me summer vacations was in my future. But still, I feel like summer is the time to crack open all the books you want to read versus the ones you feel like you have to read.

  • Get started on your summer reading with The 17 Most Anticipated YA Books To Read in JuneThe Loose Ends List by Carrie Firestone sounds especially good to me: teen goes on a death with dignity cruise with her dying grandmother—now that’s a way to spend your summer vacation.
  • If you’d like to spend your summer binge reading Sarah Dessen, check out this list from Yalsa of everything this “master of contemporary fiction” has written.
  • Considering a summer romance? Take a look at Book Riot’s list of Romantic Heroes I Wouldn’t Date first.
  • If you’re wrestling with the summer blues, these 46 Problems Only YA Characters Understand will make you feel better. I love all of these but here’s one of my favorites: “You want to be a normal teen but you can’t stop killing people.” Sigh, sucks to be you.
  • Looking for a bookish summer activity? This coming weekend Barnes and Nobles across the country will be hosting B-Fest, their first ever teen book festival. Stop in at a local Barnes & Nobles to hear YA authors speak, to participate in creative activities, and win prizes. I will be doing a presentation with fellow novel Incubator alum and YA author Jennie Wood at Barnes & Noble Braintree on Sunday 6/12 at 2 PM. I will also be appearing with fellow Merit Press author Melissa Schorr at Barnes & Noble Hingham on Friday 6/10 at 7PM, and at Barnes & Noble North Dartmouth Saturday 6/11 at 1PM.
