YA Wednesday: Winter Wonderland

snowy-woodsAlthough here in Boston winter took a long time coming, the temperature has finally plummeted and there’s actual snow on the ground. No more of that 40-degree pseudo-winter! Being a true New Englander, I always embraced winter with downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating. But let’s not forget the indoor joys of cold weather and snow: cozying up in front of a fire in a comfy armchair with a good book. I’ll never forget reading Ezra Jack Keats’ The Snowy Day as a kid and falling into the winter wonderland of the story, exploring the snow-filled world with Peter as he ventured out into the blanketed city. I empathized with Laura Ingalls Wilder’s winter hardships on the prairie. I cringed at the ill-fated sled ride in Ethan Frome. I marveled at the snowy woods in Frost’s Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. There’s just something about winter that makes you want to hunker down and read. So, time to grab a hot chocolate, pop some corn, light the fire, and settle in. And to complement the weather and your cozy mood, here are some links for your YA winter reading.
